‘Slate’ opens with the wonderfully melodic funk kicking ‘Staring Back At A Blank Screen Of Love’. This song enters your living room like a breath of fresh air. Positive from start to finish the track is held together by Pete’s smooth soaring vocals and wizard-like guitar instrumentation, Carl Iredale’s driving bass and Andy Smith’s pounding funk drums. It’s fair to say that this track sets the tone for the whole album. 'Bye Bye Bye' has an upbeat feel of The Deep South and describes an inebriated stumble home under moonlight. Compare this with the ghostly and reflective qualities of ‘Six Months ‘Til The Longest Day’, a song inspired by a visit to an ancient church late in the year. This track captivates the listener until the explosive instrumental takes hold and shakes the senses, appearing like a storm in an otherwise calm sea.
There are so many great songs on this album. Indeed in a similar vein to ‘Gravel’, ‘Slate’ combines originality, skilful instrumentation and superb lyrics.
Special mention must go to Sam Parkinson for engineering the superb sound quality and picking up the warm tones of Carl’s Double Bass, Andy’s drums and Pete’s Acoustic.
